Eye Bag Removal

Eye surgery is now the most popular facial procedure performed. The eyes are extremely important in our day to day communication. Nothing ages the face more than the eyes. As we age it is common to develop eye bags below the eye and hooded eye lids. The outer corner of the eye also drops with age.

Droopy or puffy eyes often run in families, and are common in men as well as women. Eyelid skin thins and stretches as it ages, becoming looser. Muscles weaken and the fat pads that cushion the eyeball move forward around the eyes: Droopy upper eyelids may result in hooding over the eyes as the lids become heavier and fuller.

What  is involved in Eye Bag Removal?

Eye bag removal (blepharoplasty) can reduce droopy or hooded eyelids, restore the contour to the lids and eliminate the protruding fat bags under the eyes.

The procedure may be performed under a general anaesthetic or local anaesthesia. The most common method of performing lower eyelid surgery is to make an incision along and under lower lashes. Your surgeon will cut the skin and muscle to remove a small amount of fat. The excess skin and muscle will then be trimmed from the lower lid. If you only have fatty deposits on your lower eyelids, the fat can just be removed from the inside of the eye without a visible scar.

Upper eyelid surgery involves making a curved incision across the eyelid crease in the natural skin fold, to follow the shape of your eyelids. Your surgeon will draw a line to identify the lower edge of the skin, which will be trimmed away; this will then become the scar line. The excess skin and fatty tissue will be removed to give the eyelid crease more definition. The scar will lay within the natural fold of your upper eyelids.

Post-Op Effects and Recovery Time

If you are only having eyelid surgery, you may be able to do it as a day case to avoid spending the night in hospital.

Your eyelids may feel a little tight, possibly with a slight burning sensation. Some swelling and bruising is to be expected after the procedure, for at least ten days.

The fine sutures used over the scar will be removed 5- 10 days after the procedure. For seven to ten days, the eye area will need to be cleaned and the eyes may feel sticky and itchy. In some cases, your surgeon will recommend using eye drops or a lubricant, especially at night.

Contact lenses need to be avoided for one or two weeks. Wear sunglasses to cover bruising and for protection, because the eye area will be sensitive to sun, wind and other irritants for several weeks.
