(Implants and Augmentation) According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), breast augmentation or enhancement was the number one cosmetic procedure in 2006 (with eye lid surgery second).
This procedure is performed to increase breast size and fullness in women with small breasts or those whose breasts have decreased due to pregnancy, breast feeding or weight loss.
Breast enlargement can make you feel more feminine, not only increasing the size but also adding shape and symmetry.
For many women their breasts represent their womanhood, making them conscious about their size, shape and fullness. Our skilled surgeons have many years of experience in reshaping the breast, be it enlargement, uplift or reduction, giving them a natural looking appearance whatever the chosen size.
The average woman tends to go up one or two cup sizes. A breast implant is basically a soft, silicone envelope with various fillers, which is surgically implanted under the tissues of your chest to simulate natural breast tissue. The implant can be filled with Saline (water), though the newest ones are mainly cohesive silicone gel, which is thicker and firmer than previous versions offering better shape and protection, virtually eliminating the risks of leakage and rupture.
There is a wide variety of implant designs, shapes, sizes and textures, all of which have certain advantages. Your surgeon will discuss all the options for breast implants with you so you can make an informed personal decision. Detailed measurements will be taken to determine the precise design, dimension and profile of implants to achieve your desired results.
The procedure is performed in hospital under general anaesthesia. The surgery consists of making an incision, approximately 5cm long, it may be made in the crease of the underside of the breast, the armpit or the lower edge of the areola, most commonly the crease of the breast, lifting the breast tissue, creating a pocket in the chest/ breast area, and placing an envelope containing a soft implant material underneath. The implant can be placed either under the chest muscle or directly under the breast tissue, depending on considerations such as your individual breast anatomy, breast feeding issues, lifestyle or personal preference.
Whilst the risks are low, most commonly they consist of:
It is impossible to predict how long your implants will last. It could be up to 20 years, although 16 years is the average. If you are not happy with your implants the can be removed at any time.
Following the surgery you will have stitches (which may be dissolvable) they will be covered by a dressing. If stitches need removing they will be done at 7-10 days after your operation. You shall need to wear a sports/ full support bra, for 24 hours a day for 6 – 12 weeks. As the swelling resolves the breasts will drop slightly into a normal position and shape. You will heel more quickly if you avoid stretching and lifting, so minimise arm movements. Avoid aerobic exercise for 4 weeks. Your scar may remain pink and even a little raised for several months.
