Frequent changes in weight, ageing and life can make the stomach muscles weaken, the skin sag and stretch marks appear. Stomach crunches are great and you should carry on doing them but we understand that no matter how hard you exercise, you can't always achieve the results you want.

A tummy tuck will improve the appearance of your stomach by tightening these muscles and removing the excess skin.

What is Involved?

Abdominoplasty, commonly called a "tummy tuck", is an operation to remove excess fat and skin from around the stomach. The aim is to produce a tighter, flatter stomach and it may also improve the appearance of stretch marks.

You will generally be in hospital for one to two days and you will need two to three days of rest following the procedure. This procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.

For the best results, you should be the correct weight for your height. The male abdominoplasty procedure is not a substitute for physical exercise and a balanced diet. It's also not intended to help weight control.

Post-Op Effects – Recovery

The days and weeks immediately following your surgery are critical to obtaining a good final result so you must follow your surgeon's advice. You may be advised to wear an elastic support on the operation site for several weeks. This will help to reduce swelling and improve your comfort.

You should be able to return to work two to four weeks after the operation, but vigorous exercise is not recommended for at least six weeks.

Side effects of a successful operation may include a feeling of sickness from the general anaesthetic, a swelling of the operation site and scarring that will reduce over time. The consultant will take you through all the risks and benefits associated with this type of procedure and it is important to talk through your expectations with your consultant before the procedure.
